JOHN HENRY BISHTON

John Bishton was a teacher of modern languages at BGS for a short period in the late 1950s/early 1960s. Whilst at the school, he met and married Jill Couchman who was from a local family and worked at the Shell Research Station, Woodstock Park.  His best man was a fellow master, John Weekes.

On leaving BGS, John moved to teach at Kent College, Canterbury, before taking up the position of Head of Modern Languages at King’s School, Bruton, Somerset, where he spent the rest of his teaching career.

He became a mainstay of the community in Bruton, with a particular interest in the built environment and his contribution was recognised by the award of an MBE in the 2023 New Year honours list “for services to the preservation of the historic buildings in Bruton”.

John died on 19 May 2024, aged 91, and is survived by his wife, a son and two daughters.
