It is with great sadness we report the passing of Francis (Dick) Baker CBE in December. His daughter, Karen Page, wrote to the OBA with this obituary of one of our most distinguished OBs both through public service but also in supporting the School.

Karen writes:

Francis (Dick)  Baker CBE passed away, peacefully  at Medway Maritime, on Saturday 16th December 2023. He was Head Boy at Borden Grammar in the 1950s, went on to Oxford University and then had a long  career with the Foreign and Commonwealth  Office, serving  in The Solomon Islands, Vanuatu (New Hebridies), the Falkland Islands including during the conflict in 1982 and then as Governor of St. Helena and its Dependencies 1984-1988.

Together with his wife,  Connie,  he then went on to be a Partner, working  in the family business, Crossroads Motors with their eldest son.

It was during this time  that Dad spent many years serving on The Board of Governors at Borden Grammar School. He always spoke with great affection and enthusiasm about his school years at BGS , the enduring friendships he made there and with great respect and gratitude towards the Headmaster and  teachers  whilst he was a student  and ever afterwards.

The Funeral is to be held at Garden of England Crematorium, Sheppey Way, Bobbing Sittingbourne Kent ME9 8GZ on Wednesday 24th January 2024.
